Gottman Couples Therapy

Level I: A Research-Based Approach (new and revised)

Julie and John Gottman
Seminar code: GOT-01
Led by John Gottman, PhD, and Julie Schwartz Gottman, PhD
Thursday, May 1, and Friday, May 2, 2008
9:00 am to 5:00 pm

With 35 years of research and clinical experience with couples, John and Julie Gottman have developed a new approach to couples therapy that is unique in the field for its power to strengthen romantic relationships. In this new and revised workshop, presented for the first time, the Gottmans describe their groundbreaking research, which can predict marital stability with 94 percent accuracy. Myths of what makes relationships work are dispelled, and truths that have emerged from “The Gottman Love Lab” are described. Participants will be taught key assessment techniques that work to pinpoint the strengths and challenges of a relationship and to fine-tune interventions.

In this process, three systems will be introduced. The Friendship System is the building block for intimacy, passion, and good sex. The Conflict System includes tools to manage solvable problems and to dialogue constructively about unsolvable problems. The Meaning System contains the existential foundation of the relationship and the shared roles, goals, and values that create its culture. Participants will also be introduced to the intricacies of treating co-morbidities of relationship distress, including special attention on the treatment of affairs. The Gottmans teach with a combination of warmth, humour, lecture, role-playing, and films straight out of the clinical office. Participants will leave this workshop with a new vision to help them understand their couples, and with new tools to help and empower them.

At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to —

  • Summarize the research that allows prediction of future relationship stability with 94 percent accuracy
  • Describe the seven levels of the Sound Relationship House theory
  • Conduct a couple’s therapy assessment using elements of the couple’s narrative, the Oral History Interview, written questionnaires, observations of conflict, and individual interviews
  • Describe two interventions each to help strengthen a couple’s conflict management, to enhance a couple’s friendship system, and to explore a couple’s system of shared meaning
  • Discuss how couples treatment might need to be altered to also treat a co-morbidity
