Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) is an innovative program designed to prevent relapse in people who have recovered from unipolar depression. This program combines tools of cognitive therapy with the practice and clinical application of mindfulness meditation. The heart of this work lies in acquainting participants with the modes of mind that often characterize mood disorders while inviting them to develop a new relationship with these modes. It helps give them the courage to allow distressing mood, thoughts, and sensations to come and go, without battling with them. Gaining greater clarity in how to skilfully approach moment-by-moment experience, allows participants to take more pleasure in the good things that often go unnoticed and to deal more effectively with difficulties. Participants learn that mindful recovery from depression is actually a daily practice. Be prepared to learn through doing, as we explore the clinical application of mindfulness practices through guided meditation, simulated patient-therapist encounters, and videotaped segments of actual MBCT classes. About the PresenterZindel Segal, PhD, CPsych, is one of the developers of mindfulness-based cognitive therapy. His books, Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy for Depression and The Mindful Way through Depression: Freeing Yourself from Chronic Unhappiness, the latter co-written with Jon Kabat-Zinn and others, advocate for the relevance of mindfulness-based clinical care in psychiatry and mental health. Dr. Segal holds the Morgan Firestone Chair in Psychotherapy and is a professor of psychiatry and psychology at the University of Toronto. He is a widely respected workshop leader.
