Understanding the relationship between how the brain functions and how people experience different sorts of anxiety can have profound implications for treatment. In this workshop, you will learn the neurobiology of three different anxiety states - panic, general anxiety, and social anxiety - and what clinical interventions best suit the brain structures and processes underlying them. You will learn not only how to understand the neurobiology of anxiety, but how to clearly convey this material to your clients, which itself has a calming effect. You'll come away with a key to identifying the most effective approaches - behavioural and cognitive methods, as well as physiological and mind-body approaches like muscle relaxation, mindfulness training, and focusing - that best match a client's specific form of anxiety and its neurobiological base.

Via lecture and case examples, the seminar will address:

  • Anxiety sensitivity and its role in creating powerful mental and behavioural avoidance symptoms
  • Childhood separation anxiety and its connection to later anxiety disorders
  • Co-morbidity and treatment planning
  • The impact of trauma on creating or sustaining anxiety disorders

By the end of this seminar, you will be able to —

  • Identify what underlying brain structure and function problems cause different kinds of anxious symptoms
  • Plan treatment with co-morbid anxieties and depression
  • Effectively apply treatment methods for different symptoms at the right time in the therapy process
  • Use methods that will change physiology, cognition, and behaviour
  • Choose the most appropriate relapse prevention plans
  • Describe when and how medications are integrated into psychotherapy

  • Fee: $169 until April 10; $179 after April 10

    Location: Metro-Central YMCA
    20 Grosvenor Street, Toronto
