Children are often excluded from family therapy because many practitioners don’t know how to effectively engage them. Creative activities in family therapy such as games, art, puppets, and storytelling can help engage and facilitate the participation of all family members regardless of age. Play and expressive arts techniques, in particular, have an advantage over traditional “talk therapy” because these techniques offer children a more developmentally appropriate means to communicate. Additionally, play and arts activities can reveal family dynamics and patterns of interaction.
Through this dynamic workshop, participants will learn several innovative techniques to engage, assess, and treat families. You will receive an overview on the advantages of using creative techniques with families and learn tips for overcoming challenges. Videos and live demonstrations will be used to illustrate techniques.
You will learn —
- The benefits to using play, art, and other expressive techniques in family therapy
- How to assess families using innovative play and arts techniques
- How to translate assessment material into a treatment plan
- How to choose activities and techniques that are developmentally appropriate
- Three common challenges in family therapy and specific strategies to overcome these challenges
- Many new and creative techniques that can be used in treatment sessions with families
